1977: El presidente estadounidense Jimmy Carter y el líder militar panameño Omar Torrijos firman los Tratados que establecen la entrega del Canal en 1999.

Dic.31, 1999: Fecha fijada para que Panamá asuma control absoluto del Canal

El Canal de Panamá, tiene una distancia de 80 Km desde el Oceano Pacífico al Oceano Atlantico.Una nave tarda alrededor de 8 a 10 horas  en transitar el Canal, las esclusas que elevan las naves entre el nivel del mar y el lago son las  de Gatún en el Atlántico, y las de Pedro Miguel y Miraflores en el Pacífico. Las naves descienden o ascienden unos 26 metros a través de las tres cámaras de las esclusas de Gatún.

The Panama Canal, has a distance of 80 kms from the Pacific Ocean to the Atlantic ocean. A ship takes about 8 to 10 hours to transit the Canal. The locks that raise ships from sea level and the lake are the Gatun on the Atlantic, and the Pedro Miguel and Miraflores on the Pacific. The ships descend or rises 26 meters through the three chambers of the Gatun Locks.
